CapCut vs Descript

The two editors diverge on what the AI is actually for. CapCut's AI is generative and assembler-first: Video Studio builds a whole video from chat with a style and avatar, Director Mode gives scene control from text or image inputs, EditPilot is conversational editing, and AI Extend, Animate Photo, AI image generation, AI Design and an AI body editor round it out. Its timeline is a conventional one and its strength is speed plus templates for vertical social. Where Descript converts a 90-minute conversation into clips, CapCut manufactures new footage and scenes and formats them for TikTok. Notably, Descript's interview/post workflow features — multitrack speaker tracks, dubbing, Brand Studio guardrails — have no CapCut equivalent, and CapCut's avatar and scene generation have no Descript equivalent. Descript's Sept. 2026 news cycle is all CapCut-side: Codex workflow guides for voiceover, transitions, subtitles, background music, B-roll and animated captions, positioning Codex as the planning layer in front of a CapCut edit. Neither offers simultaneous real-time collaborative editing on one project.

Both are freemium, but the risk profile is different. CapCut is the cheaper experiment: you can start without a credit card and export without a watermark, so a beginner can produce published work at zero cost and only pay when they want more. Descript's free tier has to be weighed against top-ups — the listed constraint is that high-volume producers should expect to pay for media-hour and AI-credit top-ups, and premium models sit behind paid tiers: Claude Sonnet 5 is in the picker for everyone, while Claude Fable 5 is limited to paid self-serve and Enterprise plans. Scheduled Rooms, the August 2026 recording feature, is only useful on the paid path because it drops into Google Calendar and Outlook invites and feeds your recording library. CapCut's published news doesn't change its pricing story; it expands the workflow surface around Codex (voiceover, transitions, subtitles, background music, B-roll, animated captions), all of which is content guidance rather than a new paywall. The honest read: CapCut's ceiling is lower cost but its feature set is broad and free, while Descript's ceiling is higher cost with hard usage meters — if your output is measured in hours per week, model the top-up spend before committing, because that, not the subscription sticker, is what will surprise you.
