One filter beats all others: never pay a directory that sells the outcome. A fee for a faster answer is a service; a fee that guarantees acceptance means every listing there — including yours — is an ad the audience has learned to skip.

Followed vs nofollow links. Some directories charge $99+ specifically for a dofollow link; others give every listing nofollow links that pass no search authority at all. Neither is a scam — but know which one you are buying. Nofollow listings still earn referral clicks and, increasingly, AI-assistant visibility (LLMs read directories regardless of link attributes).
