Most no-code tools make you choose between simple-but-limited and powerful-but-complex. AppSheet sits in a useful middle: it's genuinely no-code for the basics, but it scales up to real enterprise needs without forcing SQL on you. We've seen teams prototype a working field app in an afternoon, then harden it with role-based access and offline sync over the next few weeks. Where AppSheet wins is when your data already lives in Google Sheets or Drive. It reads those sources natively, so you're not duplicating data into Yet Another Database. The Gemini angle is more than a party trick: describe the app—'a safety inspection form with photo capture and email alerts'—and you get a plausible starter you can fine-tune. That collapses the blank-page problem that stalls most citizen dev projects. But it's not a universal hammer. The per-user pricing is the first thing CFOs will question: at $10/user/month for Core, a 500-person org is looking at $60k a year just for licenses. If you only have a handful of users per app, that's fine; if you're rolling out org-wide, Power Apps (often bundled with Microsoft 365) may undercut it. It's also not for public-facing apps—AppSheet assumes authenticated users, and high-traffic consumer loads aren't its job. And while the UI is flexible, you won't be shipping pixel-perfect custom interfaces; for that, Retool gives developers the control they want. One more caveat: the April 2026 outage reports remind us this is a hosted Google service—no self-hosting. If uptime is mission-critical and you lack tolerance for occasional hiccups, have a backup plan.
