Lucida's design bet is narrow and defensible: the bottleneck for most intermediate learners is not knowledge of the language but the willingness to produce it under mild pressure. Almost every study method optimises the first and ignores the second. Lucida inverts that. You open the app, you talk to Lucy, and the corrections arrive while you are still forming the next sentence. Feedback covering pronunciation, tone, pace, intonation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency and filler words is broad enough to be useful, and the fact that it is delivered in your native language matters more than it sounds: an explanation you have to decode in your target language is an explanation you will skip. The scenario library is where the product earns its keep for working adults. Presentations, meetings, sales pitches, customer service calls, job interviews, small talk and public speaking are all available without booking a human tutor. Speaking scores are CEFR-aligned and tracked, so progress is measured on a standard scale instead of a vague feeling of improvement. Six languages are supported, English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and Arabic, with lessons built by native speakers. Where it will disappoint: if you cannot yet construct a sentence, conversation practice gives you nothing to practise with. It is a speaking coach, not a grammar course, and there is no bundled reading, writing or listening curriculum. It is also an app-store purchase, which means billing and cancellation are handled by Apple or Google, and the exact subscription amount is set per country and per store, visible on the plan screen rather than on the website. Lucida for Business is priced separately, quoted on team size and deployment, and is the only route to dashboards, CEFR distribution and per-employee assessments. For those buyers, the on-premises option on a closed language model with end-to-end encryption is the genuinely differentiating piece. Where it fits: professionals whose English is technically fine but who hesitate in meetings, IELTS and TOEFL candidates who need speaking reps and a CEFR-referenced score, and customer service teams who talk on the phone all day. Where it does not: absolute beginners, learners who prefer reading and writing drills, and anyone who wants a single published dollar figure before downloading the app.
