Mintlify

Mintlify's differentiator is not the editor — GitBook and Docusaurus both let you write docs. It is the agent layer. A built-in MCP server means a coding agent can query your documentation directly instead of fetching and parsing HTML, and the September 21, 2026 addition of WebMCP pushes that further: Mintlify sites now expose typed tools so browser agents can search, read, and navigate docs. Mintlify Index takes the opposite angle, aggregating 9,000+ Mintlify-powered sites into a natural-language retrieval layer, while llms.txt generation was rebuilt in September 2026 as a hierarchy of files so large sites stop dropping pages that exceeded the 100,000-character limit. That is real infrastructure, not copy. The authoring side has matured just as fast. Editor branches with draft PRs and autosave, GitLab MR sync, and Automations rebuilt in September 2026 with pre-built templates, scoped GitHub triggers, and automatic merge-conflict resolution on their own PRs. The editor agent can now call connected third-party apps as tools, revert pages edited during a session, and read your open page including unsaved edits. Support integrations, agent skills, and AI translations round out the deflection use case. Where it gets weaker: pricing transparency of value. Scoring a fixed credit price per AI action — 25 credits per assistant answer, 250 per automation update, $0.01 per credit past 10,000/month on Pro — is fair and predictable, but a busy docs site with chatty users can burn credits quickly, and Starter gets no credits or assistant at all. SSO, SCIM, RBAC, audit logs, IP allowlists, and BYOK sit behind Enterprise, which is a hard wall for a mid-size team with a compliance requirement. There is no self-hosting and no on-prem, though EU hosting and self-hosting are listed as available on Enterprise. Pick Mintlify when agent consumption is a measurable part of your docs traffic; pick Docusaurus when it isn't and you want to spend nothing; pick GitBook when collaborative authoring matters more than agent retrieval.
