TaxHacker takes a refreshingly different approach to accounting: instead of being a black-box SaaS, it's open-source and designed for people who want to own their data and tune the AI to their exact needs. The LLM-powered receipt and invoice analysis works surprisingly well across languages and photo qualities, and the ability to write custom AI prompts to extract custom fields (like risk level or project codes) is a genuine differentiator. We'd reach for it when we need to automate expense categorization across multiple currencies (including crypto) and want to keep everything on our own server. Where it bites: the interface is functional but rough around the edges, there's no multi-user support yet, and you need to be comfortable with Docker and API keys. Compared to Firefly III (another open-source accounting tool), TaxHacker leans harder into AI automation but offers less budgeting and reporting polish. For non-technical users or teams, we'd still recommend QuickBooks or Wave. In practice, the cloud edition (€10/month) is a fair trade-off if you don't want to self-host, but the feature set is still expanding. If the team delivers on promised features like smart VAT reports and local LLM models, TaxHacker could become a go-to for indie developers and small privacy-focused businesses.
