Portt vs The New Black

The New Black is a workflow product, not a single generator. Its features chain: AI clothing generation from a prompt, sketch, or reference, Sketch to Design, image-to-flat-sketch for the tech pack, fabric/print/colour swaps on an existing garment photo, an AI fashion model generator, ghost mannequin output, and virtual try-on across clothing, jewelry, bags, shoes, and accessories. The differentiator versus image tools is the AI Tech Pack Generator — auto-drafted size charts, grading, and a bill of materials with suppliers, quantities, and prices — plus an AI tech pack review that flags inconsistencies before factory handoff, on an editable canvas exported to PDF. It also covers video (UGC clips, lookbooks, 360 turns, ads). Its March 2026 additions, AI Moodboard and AI Lookbook, extend this into seasonal planning and collection presentation.

Portt does one thing in a completely different market: it rebuilds a photo as a historically accurate scene, changing architecture, vehicles, and clothing, with year selection from 3000 BCE to 2050, location-based reconstruction (Paris 1920s), authentic film grain, landmark detection, and an On This Day widget. It outputs transformed photos and time-travel video morphs, with a Scene Context text field for sharper results.

The overlap in capability is essentially zero. The New Black's imagery must preserve a real garment exactly; Portt's job is to alter everything in the frame.

Both are listed as freemium, but the models point at different buyers. The New Black introduced updated pricing in January 2026 with four tiers — Starter, Pro, Business, and Enterprise — featuring rollover credits and unlimited team seats across all paid plans. That's a seat-and-credit structure built for teams producing a full catalog at once, with brand-consistent Visual DNA and bulk generation. The costs to watch are credit consumption on volume work and plan lock-in; the company's own positioning warns off teams on a tight budget who can't absorb credit costs. The upside is replacing per-pack fees and photoshoot bookings.

Portt gates unlimited use behind payment after a 7-day trial. Because it's a consumer iOS app, that's a single-user subscription decision — trial, then pay if you like the effect. There's no team licensing, no seat math, no rollover-credit planning, and no production-volume economics to model.

Comparing the two price sheets is meaningless: one is a per-credit production platform for a brand's seasonal output, the other is a personal app subscription. A buyer evaluating The New Black should compare it to other design-to-tech-pack tools, not to a photo filter app.
