We'd reach for Forma when we need to rapidly test site massing options and get environmental feedback before committing to a design direction. The AI-powered design automations and built-in analyses (sun hours, wind, embodied carbon) are genuinely useful for early-phase decisions—things that would otherwise require multiple specialized tools or manual calculations. The cloud platform means no local install, and the Forma Board lets stakeholders mark up and compare options without breaking BIM data connections. Where it bites: if your firm doesn't use Revit, Rhino, or Dynamo, you lose much of the integration value. Standalone pricing is steep for small practices, and the tool intentionally stops at schematic design—you'll need other software for construction documents and detailed engineering. Forma competes most directly with early-phase analysis tools like SketchUp with Sefaira (now part of Trimble) or simple Excel massing—but Forma's BIM-connected workflow gives it an edge for teams already in the Autodesk ecosystem. In practice, we'd only recommend standalone Forma if you're a mid-to-large firm doing significant site planning work; otherwise, the AEC Collection is a better deal if you already license other Autodesk products.
