Hermex is exactly what it says on the tin: a native iPhone client for your self-hosted Hermes agent. If you already run hermes-webui, this app gives you a polished mobile interface that feels faster and more reliable than browser-based or PWA alternatives. We'd reach for this when we need to steer a Hermes session while away from a desk — tweaking reasoning settings mid-conversation or attaching a photo from the camera roll. The real-time streaming works smoothly, and the UI is uncluttered. Where it bites: the technical barrier. You must set up and expose your own server via Cloudflare Tunnel or Tailscale, configure a password, and ensure Python 3.11+ is available. This is not a consumer plug-and-play app. It's a tool for homelab enthusiasts and developers who are comfortable with command-line setups. Compared to cloud-based agent apps like ChatGPT or Perplexity, Hermex offers complete data privacy — your conversations never touch third-party servers. But it also lacks the convenience of a hosted backend: no push notifications, no multi-device sync unless you set it up yourself, and no web or Android clients yet. The app is free, open-source (MIT), and has no analytics. That's a strong trust signal. The GitHub source is available for review, which is a nice plus for security-minded users. In practice, Hermex works reliably once the tunnel is up. The offline cache (7 days / 5,000 messages) lets you scroll through past conversations without a signal. iPad support is marked as "Coming Soon" — that's a current limitation for tablet users. We'd recommend Hermex to anyone already invested in Hermes and self-hosting. For everyone else, the setup friction is real. Consider whether you want a hosted agent or native mobile control before diving in.
