Nightingale turns your local music collection into a surprisingly capable karaoke machine, and it does so entirely offline after the first run. The vocal separation using UVR Karaoke or Demucs sounds clean, and WhisperX word-level lyric alignment is fast and accurate for most English songs. We were impressed by the CJK support — per-character forced alignment with romanized readings is a niche feature you won't find in most karaoke apps. Pitch scoring works in real-time with adjustable microphone gain and latency calibration. The audio-reactive shader backgrounds are a nice touch, and the self-hosted web mode lets anyone on the home network join a session from a browser. Player profiles keep scores separate, so parties stay competitive without confusion. Where Nightingale falls short is the lack of a built-in song store. You must bring your own audio files — no streaming catalog, no recommendations. The initial model download is large (several GB), and GPU acceleration is needed for real-time separation on larger libraries. Non-technical users might struggle with setup, though the single-binary installer helps. Compared to alternatives like UltraStar or Karafun, Nightingale offers more advanced AI features and total privacy, but demands more from the user. Karafun has a subscription with a huge licensed catalog; Nightingale has nothing like that. Pick Nightingale if you have a big music library, value privacy, and enjoy tinkering. Pass if you want instant access to thousands of songs without effort.
