Respell entered the AI automation space in early 2023 with a clear mission: let non-technical users chain LLM prompts into 'spells' without code. It succeeded in making AI accessible, powering millions of workflows for businesses of all sizes. The visual builder was intuitive, and the pre-built spells saved time on common tasks like web research and data extraction. Where Respell shined was its focus on agentic behaviors early on. The Research Agent, launched May 2023, automated multi-step web research—a sign of where the industry was heading. Respell also supported multiple LLMs, giving flexibility, and integrated with spreadsheets and other common tools. For ops teams and small business owners who wanted to automate without a developer, it was a compelling choice. But the story changed in January 2024. Respell was acquired by Salesforce and absorbed into Agentforce. The standalone product shut down March 1, 2024, with migration offered through Lindy. If you're a former user, Lindy is likely a good next step. For anyone else, Respell is effectively dead. When to pick: if you were a previous customer and have been contacted by Lindy, take the migration deal. When to pass: if you're looking for a new no-code AI automation tool today—Respell is gone. Instead, consider Lindy (direct alternative, partner for migration), Gumloop (similar visual builder, active development), or Zapier AI (broader integration ecosystem). In practice, Respell proved that agentic no-code automation was viable, but the acquisition cut its life short. The core team now works on Agentforce, which may inherit some of Respell's DNA—but that's a different product with a Salesforce-sized price tag. For the DIY automator, Respell is a memory, not a tool.
