TalkToType solves two problems with one local desktop app, and it solves them narrowly and honestly. The first problem is input speed. Push-to-talk dictation into any focused field is not novel, but the execution targets a specific behaviour: hold a key, speak a full thought, release. The vendor's own framing is that people write better prompts to ChatGPT when they speak than when they type, and the app supports that by landing text directly in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Cursor, Slack, Gmail, Notion, Word, Google Docs, Outlook, WhatsApp and VS Code. A personal dictionary fixes names and jargon, and a remappable hotkey lets you re-paste the last dictation without re-speaking it. The second problem is meeting capture without a bot. Recording your microphone plus your system audio means you get both sides of a Teams, Zoom, Google Meet or Webex call in one local file — no "bot has joined" banner in front of a prospect, and no third-party server holding the audio. The transcript scrolls live in 30-second chunks and you finish with an MP3 and a clean text file. That combination is the strongest part of the product, and the sales and recruiting personas in particular get real value from it. The genuinely differentiated feature is live checklists. Pre-write your discovery questions, interview prompts, intake items, even a medical appointment list; the AI watches the transcript and ticks items off as they come up. Recruiters see in real time whether they've covered everything before the call ends. The second differentiator is quieter: drag in existing WAV or MP3 files — voice memos, interview recordings, archived audio — and get the same transcript and summary as a live session, which turns an afternoon of scrubbing into minutes. Where it sits in the category: Otter and Fireflies are cloud platforms with shared workspaces, team seats and admin controls — and, importantly, a bot that joins the call. TalkToType deliberately isn't that. It's a personal tool for one person on one machine. There are no shared workspaces, no admin roles, no audit trails, no iOS or Android app, and Windows 10/11 plus macOS 13+ on Apple Silicon is the whole platform list. Eleven languages are supported, but only two can be bound for hotkey switching at a time. The premium Gemini Pro transcript upgrade is the soft spot: it adds higher accuracy, speaker labels and timestamps, but the vendor treats it as a paid add-on without publishing capability limits in the material available to us. Budget for it as a separate line item if word-for-word accuracy matters for your reports. Legal note the vendor itself raises: recording happens locally on your computer, so informing participants is your responsibility where local law requires it — the EU does, most US states do. That's a real operational step for sales and recruiting calls.
