Yaps

Yaps is a rare tool that delivers on its promise of a private, offline second brain. We'd reach for this when we want to dictate code comments in VS Code, save a long-form article for later, or ask a question about notes we took weeks ago — all without worrying about data leaving the machine. The on-device transcription is fast and accurate, especially on Apple Silicon, and the vault's plain Markdown format means no lock-in. The Studio Editor and custom voice commands are thoughtful additions that extend the tool beyond basic dictation into a content creation workflow. Where it bites: No sync across devices — your vault lives on one machine unless you manually move files. Teams or collaboration features are absent. The AI answering is local and competent but not GPT-level — it's a search-and-cite system, not a chatbot. The Windows version is still in beta, so stability may vary. If you need multi-platform sync or cloud-powered intelligence, look elsewhere. Compared to Talon Voice, Yaps is more approachable and doesn't require a programming mindset to set up. Against Whisper Memos, Yaps offers a richer on-device experience with dictation, clipping, and read-aloud in one app, but lacks the same polish on mobile (Android app is basic). In practice, Yaps is best for solo knowledge workers who value privacy and are willing to forgo convenience features like cloud sync. If you're a writer, developer, or accessibility user who needs voice input everywhere without sending data to a server, Yaps is a solid choice. But if you need to access your notes from multiple devices or collaborate with a team, you'll be disappointed.
