Why people look for alternatives to Ello
The complaints that come up most often in public discussion — reviews, forums and community threads. Not our opinion, and not the vendor's marketing.
- Does not teach phonics or basic letter sounds; unsuitable for complete beginners.
- AI-generated images in books are a turn-off for some parents.
- No support for non-verbal children or those needing alternative input methods.
- Ethical concerns about children trusting an LLM at a formative age.

In fairness: users also consistently praise kids love the engaging ello character and find it fun and motivating, and real-time corrective feedback helps children improve reading fluency while they read aloud. A complaint list is not a verdict — see the full picture on the Ello page.
